About MeHello, my name is Richard Spencer and for the last 5 years I have been taking part in 4x4 Off Road Motor Sports with my trusty Land Rover. Back in 2003 I set up a web site www.doric4x4.co.uk to show what Yorkshire Off Road Club members were up to in both terms of competing and their vehicle modifications. In 2005 I started to take an interest in photography and took along a Fuji FinePix S7000 camera. The Fuji served me well as a very good starter’s camera and several shots taken at the Belgium Goodwill 2006 event appeared in an article I wrote for the Land Rover Enthusiast magazine. Here is an example….
By 2007 I was taking photographs at other club events e.g. Northern Counties Off Road Traillers Club and some Off Road Pay and Play sites and also at Parkwood 4x4 Centre in Tong and Cowm Leisure 4x4 Centre. The experience helped to improve my photographic skills. Whilst photographing at the Rochdale and District Motor Cycle Clubs Christmas charity event, the focusing capability of my camera deteriorated. I then decided to get a digital SLR. I purchased a Canon EOS 400D (Digital Rebel Xti) with an 18mm-55mm kit lens. Before I took my first shot I knew I would need something to get a little closer. Sticking with Canon I opted for a 28mm-135mm lens and, after a lot of practice, I started to get some very nice shots. 15,000 shots later the Ultra-Sonic motor on the Canon 28mm-135mm lens failed. I progressed to a Tamron F2.8 28mm-104mm lens. Up to 70mm the images this produced were very sharp and in shady places, such as woods, the F2.8 gave me a huge advantage over the Canon. Unfortunately this lens is very slow at focusing on moving objects so few weeks later I opted for a more professional Canon 24mm-105mm L series lens - to date this has a proven record of good quality shots.
